By Harry Lawrance
You’ve saved up for months to afford your skiing holiday, only when you arrive at your destination you find that you’ll be spending more time in the bar than on the slopes as the one vital ingredient, snow, has failed to materialise. up without snow, make sure you have the best chance of receiving compensation by purchasing the right travel insurance before you go. Around one in seven skiers do not have any travel insurance and according to research by price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, sixteen percent of skiers do not have specialist winter sports cover, which was described as being “almost as bad as no insurance at all”.

The usual insurance payout for piste closure claims is £20 or £30 per person, per day but you will get wide variations on how piste closure is defined.

Many insurers including American express, Boots and Churchill, deem the resort to be open if at least one lift is running. Resort managers will usually do everything in their power to keep one lift going as it increases their number of “days open” and helps business.

Other insurers such as Direct Travel and Flexicover Direct take a fairer view and will pay out if 80% or more of the lifts are shut.
